About the band

Klezmania is a long running (born 1993) riot of a band, breaking down genres and styles in its path, filling the room with energy and passion whenever they play. Long regarded as one of Australia's foremost musical outfits, they bring to their dynamic instrumentals and songs the sounds of klezmer, blues, ska, Gypsy swing and waltzes, jazz, Australian folk music, romantic ballads, whirling frenetic traditional dance tunes and more. They carry the audience along an emotional journey and break down language barriers through engaging explanations of the Yiddish songs.

What they said...

"...it was a grand concert, and very well attended. I loved the lighting [snip] and thought the band was just perfect. [snip] we still had lots of jobs to do at that time, but whether inside or outside, I was struck by how appropriate it all was - your choice of songs, and especially the little "eco" comments put in to maintain the theme.

You would have noticed, too, how much the audience enjoyed it - from the dancers at the back, to the jiggling feet and joining in of the seated audience and then their most enthusiastic applause. It really was a lovely way to end a special day.

We were very fortunate that such a first class klezmer band was prepared to perform for us so generously. Please would you convey the thanks of the JECO committee to the other members of the band as well. Best wishes for your continuing success and enjoyment of klezmer music.
Dina (JECO Committee) from personal letter of thanks to Klezmania after their Tu b'shevat festival.

...just to add that one of the bar-mitzvah students told me and the others that 'The Klezmania concert was the best thing - absolutely brilliant!'
Rabbi Jonathan Keren Black also after the Tu b'shevat festival

"Jump up on the table and dance music..." Andrew Pattison - Multicultural Arts Victoria Newsletter

"Freydi Mrocki... provides emotion-charged vocals that easily surmount the language barriers..." The Age

"Lionel Mrocki, switching hats as he switches musical styles, can make a clarinet wail and yell with almost human joy and suffering..." The Age

"... The main thing I remember is the sheer joy of the music. It is very infectious." The Melbourne Times

"The group then performed three songs, compelled by a cheering crowd - some of whom had been unable to resist the melodies to spring spontaneously into dance - to perform an encore." Yvonne Fein - Australian Jewish News

"...For a change of pace we clap our hearts out upstairs at the Athenaeum. The tantalising Yiddish folk group Klezmania really gets the blood rhythms flowing... We're packed to the roof." The Age
